Acorus calamus L.

Acorus calamus L.

Gelidiaceae

The generic name comes from the Greek akoros - a plant with a creeping rhizome. Species definition is derived from the Greek kalamos - reeds, reeds, because of the similarity with the latter. The motherland of the ara of the common is China and India.

Collection and procurement. For medicinal purposes, the rhizomes of the aura are used, which are harvested in autumn and early winter, when the water level drops. Find ayr is not easy, and collect it in more or less significant quantities and even more so. Therefore, large farms have been established, which are engaged in planting the rhizomes of the calamus, in order to obtain powerful plants from them. From June to July, and in plantings and later (in early autumn), the rhizomes are excavated. After thorough cleaning, they are cut along, repeatedly cut into pieces in length of 10-20 cm and laid out in a shaded place for drying. If you need air for ingestion, it makes sense to clear the rhizome from the bark before drying. Well dried pieces of rhizomes should not bend, but break. On the fracture have a whitish pink color (occasionally with a yellow or greenish tinge). Shelf life of raw materials is 2-3 years. The taste of raw materials is spicy-bitter, smell fragrant. Repeated billets in the same place can be conducted no earlier than in 10 years.

Erroneously, the rhizome-like roots of the airoids (Iris pseudacorus L.), which are outwardly similar to the aureus, can be prepared. However, near the tangent, the flowers, unlike the aira, are large, yellow, and the rhizomes and leaves are odorless.

Active ingredients: essential oil and bitter glycoside acorin. In addition, apparently, a certain activity is possessed in fewer tannins. Vitamins, minerals, protein and starch, which are usually part of the rhizomes, in the case of calamus, from the point of view of their action, are only accompanying substances.

Healing action and application.Ayr tones the heart, strengthens the vessels of the brain and thereby improves memory, strengthens the eyesight. Air belongs to the group of aromatic bitteries and is therefore applicable for gastrointestinal diseases and diseases of the biliary system, with loss of appetite and for a general increase in the tone of the digestive tract. Particularly good for ayr helps with gastrointestinal diseases, the cause of which should be sought in the autonomic nervous system. Such patients - usually thin, almost dystrophic - complain that they rarely have a good appetite, and if it does, it disappears as soon as they sit down at the table. They eat extremely slowly and rejoice at any pause that occurs in the process of eating, and therefore always "weave" at the table behind everyone. After eating, they complain of a feeling of heaviness, pressure in the stomach, sometimes for spasmodic pains and often for an acidic eructation. Diarrhea and constipation alternate. There are, however, periods when they do not suffer at all from their ailment, while any business with haste and excitement or personal adversity will not bring to naught a good state of health. The doctor does not find in these patients any organic disorders, ascertaining only the increased or decreased acidity of the gastric juice. Prescribed medications may help, but for a very short time. Neither antispasmodics (substances that remove spasms), antacids (acid-binding substances), enzyme preparations that promote digestion, or the appropriate combinations do not lead to permanent improvement. It is to such patients that the course of treatment with tea from aira helps. If they regularly before each meal - at least 2 times a day - drink 1 cup of tepid tea from the aura, the ailments pass slowly, but reliably. To enhance the healing effect of tea, the practice of using baths with aura has proved to be very useful.
Tea from ayr:2 teaspoons (about 3 g) of finely chopped peeled calamus root are poured into 1/4 l of boiling water and insist for about 15 minutes. After straining, you should drink tepid tea.
Bath with air: For a bath of calamus - if you do not use ready-made extracts - you need about 100 g of raw calamus from the bark, which is boiled for 10 minutes in 1 liter of water and then filtered. The expressed liquid is sufficient for one bath filled with water. Since these baths are excitatory, they should not be taken in the evening. Baths from the aura have a beneficial effect on the body also with general exhaustion after prolonged disease states and with various metabolic disorders.
Infusion of rhizomes of calamus(Infusum rhizoma Acori Calami): 10 g (2 tablespoons) of raw materials are placed in enameled pots, poured into 200 ml of hot boiled water, covered with a lid and heated in boiling water (in a water bath) for 15 minutes, cooled at room temperature for 45 minutes , filter, the remaining raw material is squeezed. The volume of the infusion obtained is adjusted to 200 ml with boiled water. Cooked infusion stored in a cool place for no more than 2 days. Take in a warm form for 1/4 cup 3-4 times a day for 30 minutes before meals.
Tincture of rhizomes of calamus(Tinctura rhizoma Acori Calami). Tincture is prepared on 40% alcohol (1: 5). The composition of tincture - transparent liquid brownish-yellow, aromatic, bitter-spicy taste - includes grass of gold-thousandth, gentian (4 parts), rhizomes of calamus (2 parts), leaves of three-leafed watch, herb wormwood, mandarin peel (1 part) , 40% alcohol (up to 65 parts). Take tincture of 20 drops 2 times daily before meals.
Broth calamus rhizomes (Decoctum rhizoma Acori Calami) was prepared from 10 g rhizomes per 200 ml of water.
Chew a rhizome for heartburn, toothache, for the prevention of influenza, strengthening the gums, protecting the teeth from destruction. When the rhizomes are chewed, the gag reflex increases, which used to be used to get rid of the habit of smoking.
Broth rhizomes wash the head to strengthen hair, or in a mixture with the rhizome rhinoceros and "cone" hops are used for hair loss, as well as drink in lichens and wash the affected areas.

Tablets "Vicalinum" (Tabulettae Vicalinum) contain bismuth nitrate basic 0.35 g, magnesium carbonate basic 0.4 grams, sodium bicarbonate 0.2 grams, powder rhizomes ayr and crust of the buckthorn to 0.025 grams, rutin and kellin 0,005 g. Apply drug with peptic ulcer of stomach and duodenum and hyperacid gastritis.

Tablets "Roter" (Tabulettae Roter) produced by the Netherlands. The composition and action are similar to the drug "Vikalin".

Tablets "Vicair" (Tabulettae Vicairum) contain bismuth nitrate basic 0.35 g, magnesium carbonate basic 0.4 grams, sodium bicarbonate 0.2 grams, powdered rhizomes of aira and buckthorn (finely ground) to 0.025 g.

Application in folk medicine.Apparently, it is difficult to find any other curative plant, the use of which reliably dates back to the 7th century BC. Ancient Persian writings say that the ayr was used at that time. Not only in Persia, but also in China, and in India it was known as a magnificent gastric remedy long before our calendar. Used this plant and Dioscorides from Ancient Greece, which recommended its use in diseases of the liver, spleen, respiratory tract, and also as a diuretic and tonic. Avicenna recommended it as a purifying, with diseases of the stomach, liver, as a diuretic. In his opinion, the calamus "thinens the thickening of the cornea and helps with the thorns, but especially suits its squeezed juice in both cases." In the Middle Ages, ayr was considered an excellent disinfectant. It was chewed for prophylaxis in case of epidemic of typhus, cholera, influenza, powder of ayr poured in festering ulcers and wounds. A fragrant plant was used in rituals (as applied to our time), for the holiday of the Trinity, its leaves were covered with floors and even courtyards.
Air is valued in folk medicine as a remedy against violations in the digestive system as a whole. Moreover, tea from the rhizome of aira is used as a detergent against skin rashes and dandruff. The essential aiir oil, obtained by steam distillation, or the alcohol extract from the rhizomes of ara are also used as rubbing against rheumatic ailments.
Tatars considered air a plant that cleans the water, and were convinced that wherever it grows, one can drink it without any risk to health. For this, the Tatar horsemen carried pieces of living rhizomes with them and threw them into all the water bodies that met on the way. The rhizomes quickly took root, and soon the banks of the reservoirs were overgrown with a continuous belt of a fragrant plant. Therefore, already in the XIII century, the well-known in the territory of Ukraine, Lithuania and Poland.
In Korean medicine - as a tonic and aromatic gastric remedy, as well as in dystonia, loss of memory, impaired vision, chronic gastritis, abdominal pain, swollen abdomen, decreased appetite, indigestion, cardioneurosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and in the form of a powder - with furunculosis and abrasions.
In Chinese medicine - with epilepsy, rheumatism, as antipyretic and bactericidal in cholera; for improvement and aggravation of hearing.
In the Indian - as a bactericide, which kills tubercle bacilli.
In Tibetan - as an effective remedy for ulcers in the throat and gastroenteritis.
In Bulgarian folk medicine - with anemia, as a means of regulating menstruation, with kidney, liver and gallbladder disease; ayrnoe oil - with hysteria and gastric colic.

Side effects. Despite the positive qualities of calamus, one should refrain from long treatment courses. Do not use during pregnancy!

Application in other areas. Fragrant leaves of the aura are covered with floors, decorated with walls of premises. In Poland, the leaves are added to the dough for flavoring bread. Rhizomes are used for washing and baths. Of these rivets are made for tubs, barrels. In the Caucasus, leather is used for tanning. Essential oil of rhizomes of ara is used in perfumery (for flavoring soap, toothpastes, creams and different lipsticks), alcoholic beverage (for making bitter vodka, liqueurs, beer, fruit essences) and fish industry (to give the fish a pleasant aroma and slightly bitter taste) culinary and confectionery production. Dried rhizome is used as a spice instead of bay leaf, cinnamon, ginger. Air is widely used in veterinary medicine. It is believed that the air destroys fleas and other insect parasites.

Air in magic.
